Chandler wins Defensive Player of the Year

NEW YORK - Tyson Chandler had won the Defensive of the Year. New York Knicks center was successfully set aside Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic.

Howard is the winner of this award for three years. Chandler became the first Knicks player to win the NBA's Player of the Year.

Chandler gained 45 votes, Ibaka, 41 vote, and Howard 18 votes from a panel of 121 writers and sports announcers.

"Considered to be the best defender in the league this alone is a big achievement for me. Every time I think about when practicing in the gym every day, I thought that this title will fall to the glamor players, "Chandler said as quoted by ESPN, Thursday (05/03/2012).

"It's always like that throughout my career. So, when I finally get this award, I like getting the whole world, "I'm Chandler of relief.

Chandler statistics in the regular season 2011-2012 was an average of 9.9 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 0.9 steals. Although not a top record in the NBA, but his presence is crucial for the Knicks. When Chandler sidelined, opponents of the Knicks can score an average of 113 points.

With performance like this, the Knicks brought back from a team ranked 22 in terms of defense in 2010-2011 and then to fifth in this season.

Chandler is also part of the team that won the NBA's Dallas Mavericks last season.
