Giant Wombat Fossils Found in Australia

SYDNEY - Fossils of a giant wombat found in northern Australia, said the scientists. It is said that this fossil is the most comprehensive in the discovery of other similar fossils.

As quoted by AFP on Thursday (07/07/2011), ancient giant wombats estimated weighs three tons, and are marsupials (mammals with a pouch in the stomach), the largest that ever lived on Earth, approximately two million to 50 thousand years ago.

Fossils of a giant wombat was found in remote areas of Queensland last week. Scientists believe that these findings can be explained in more detail about the life of ancient wombats.

"There are many who question the scientific debate what killed the giant animals, and this has become a hot topic in the world of paleontology," said Sue Hand, a professor from the team that found the fossil.

Among the giants of ancient animals native to Australia, including kangaroos and giant bears, Diprotodon (wombats) are estimated to become extinct due to human activity, which first appeared at the same time as the marsupials.

Fossils of ancient wombat has a height of 2 meters and 3.5 meters long. Size fitting to describe the size of the animal is a rhinoceros or a car.

Wombats are marsupials native to Australia a short-legged, four-legged and has a length of approximately 1 meter with a very short tail. The name wombat comes from the Eora, the Aboriginal communities who are natives of the Sydney area.
