Galaxy Andromeda and the Milky Way collision is predicted

WASHINGTON - NASA astronomers predict the likelihood of a collision between Andromeda and the Milky Way galaxy. It is estimated to occur approximately 4 billion years.

NASA proclaimed, Saturday (06/02/2012), when the collision occurred, the Milky Way will be completely changed. The sun is expected to be catapulted into a new territory in this galaxy, but the Earth and solar system are not in danger of collapse.

"Our findings are statistically consistent with the collision between the galaxy Andromeda and the Milky Way galaxy where we are," said Roeland ven der Marel of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore.

The astronomers discovered this possibility by measuring the motion of the Andromeda galaxy using the Hubble Space Telescope. At present, the galaxy is 2.5 million light years from Earth, but inevitably moving towards the direction of the Milky Way.

The movement of Andromeda is caused by the gravitational attraction between the two galaxies. In addition, the invisible dark matter around both galaxies also contribute to the distance between the two grew closer.

"After nearly a century of speculation about the fate of Andromeda and the Milky Way, at least we have a clear picture about the possibilities that will happen billions of years," added Tony Sohn Sangmo from the STScI.
