Tahani Amer story, scientists at NASA's headscarf

Her appearance in the ranks of the striking photographs of women employees in the United States Space Agency (NASA), was on the Women @ NASA website. He was the only one who wore a headscarf.

Her name was Tahani Amer, a doctorate in engineering from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Everyday, he worked at the branch Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or Computational Fluid Dynamics NASA. There he struggled with the computer code CFD to climb the wind tunnel ceiling to install a speed measuring device.

"I'm a Muslim American, NASA employees, who grew up in a suburb of Cairo, Egypt," said Amer, as published by NASA sites.

Amer interest in the technique arose when he saw his father repair a car engine in a small apartment in Egypt. While her passion for math paved the way into aeronautical engineer who worked in one of the world's most prominent institutions. "For me, education is the key that opens many opportunities," he said.

Amer told initially he wanted to attend medical school in Cairo. However, his choice to change his ideals. He was married at the age of 17 years and moved to the United States.

"Mathematics is my favorite subject," he said. "When I arrived in the U.S. in 1983 and went into my first calculus class, I could not speak a single word in English. But I can get an A in that subject," the story of him. It was then that Amer was, his career in engineering will be the future.

He also successfully completed non-degree courses in engineering in two years, while raising two small children. Then he earned his degree in engineering, followed by master's in aeronautical engineering, and then a doctorate in engineering.

Amer began his career at NASA in 1992, the CFD project. Since then he gained much valuable experience working with many intelligent scientist who loves his job. Then, he worked on one of NASA's wind tunnel to conduct experiments and thermal pressure sensitive paint. "I worked with CFD computer codes and climb the ceiling to install the tool speed. This is incredible, I like a little girl in 'candy store' NASA. Everything was possible."

Amer claimed never get bored working at NASA. He even managed to find and patented a system for measuring the thermal conductivity of thin films.

Brains were favored and educational opportunities, making Amer not stingy to share knowledge. He diligently participate in social programs organized by NASA.

He was active in the mosques, to teach about Islam and recite the Quran to children. "Post-September 11 attacks, I participated to give an understanding of Islam in my community. I also give lectures in churches, in many universities, and local schools. Even the local newspaper interviewed me about Islam," said Amer.

During his lifetime Amer had three principles: to serve God you serve all beings; that education is the key that opens opportunities, and strive to serve others with compassion and kindness.

"With the three principles that I try to apply the standards of everyday life to challenge myself in my work at NASA, trying to continue to improve, and help others through a large organization: NASA."

NASA developed the Women @ NASA website in an effort to help high school students to explore career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
