Pelaut Tua Lintasi Laut Atlantik dengan Rakit

Philipsburg - A 85-year-old British sailor succeeded in realizing his childhood dream. Himself successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean just by using the raft.

Accompanied by three colleagues, Anthony Smith took two months in crossing the Atlantic Ocean. His trip was starting smoothly, he is only hindered by damage to the small part of the raft that he used.

Crew of ship departed from the Canary Islands, after previously planned trip was delayed for a month. When I started the journey, the boat is filled by a variety of foods such as citrus, avocado, potatoes, cabbage and pumpkins.

Uniquely raft was constructed from water pipe 12 meters long and 14 other small pipe. While seven pipes used to deliver clean water. The raft was also equipped with 12-meter-high mast and a screen measuring 37 meters square.

This raft can sail at speeds up to 4 knots. While during control raft, the crew required to be alert until they are not reading books or playing cards.

"I think we all, enjoy the evening situation in which we alert each other of the condition of the sea," Smith said as quoted by the Associated Press on Friday (08/04/2011).

Smith's action is an attempt to prove that the elderly can still perform hazardous activities. They do this also to raise funds for non-profit UK, WaterAid.
